Children should enjoy playing football. Parents should enjoy watching their children play as well. To help make sure this happens it is important that the club, children and parents work together. You can help children enjoy their football, improve and play the right way.
• Make sure children arrive at training and games on time, dressed appropriately for the weather and with a water bottle
• Encourage children to practise what they have been learning and get involved yourself if possible
• Encourage children throughout games but please allow us to coach without giving your own instructions – children can find lots of different instructions confusing
• Applaud good play by all children playing in the game, including the opposition
• Praise children for what they try to do regardless of the result
• Allow children to make mistakes, learn from them and fix their own problems on the pitch where they can
• Please don’t reward children for scoring goals. By all means celebrate this with children, but by giving money for this children can focus just on trying to score for themselves rather than what is best for their team or trying to complete other challenges they and their teammates are set
• Praise children for meeting individual and team challenges as well as / instead of the result of the game
• Once games have finished please talk to your child about the game if they want to, and let them know how much you love watching them play football. Try not to over analyse the game though, they are only children and still learning!
• Try not to get too carried away during a game! Matches are exciting, but support that becomes too loud, offers additional instructions, or questions decisions made by coaches and officials, does not create the best environment for children to enjoy their football and improve.
Remember, these are children playing friendly football matches for pleasure with referees, coaches and parents who are giving up their own time so this can happen.
Please help make sure everyone enjoys their football!
