The academy offers children in Reception and Year One at school the opportunity to begin playing football. Training sessions take place every Saturday at the Lorkin Daniel field (behind the Orpen Hall in West Bergholt). Training sessions cost just £2 each week which is only payable when children attend training (no up front termly cost). All money raised from the academy goes back into running the football club.
The training sessions themselves include a variety of games, activities and practices designed to allow children to understand how to play football and have fun. All children, boys or girls, those who have played football before and those who are starting out, will be made to feel welcome. Training sessions most weeks start with warm up games, we then look at a specific skill and children have the opportunity to develop this skill, or one covered in previous weeks, during practice sessions before finishing training with small sided games.
Throughout training sessions, and when children are ready, they will be encouraged to be confident on the ball, trying to run past opponents and hide the ball from them. While small sided games will be played it will be the above things, and the use of the skills the children have been taught, that we will be looking for from the children, not which team won or who scored the most goals.
Training sessions are led by Jamie Bowden, an FA qualified football coach who has been coaching at the academy for five years and is also a trainee teacher. A number of fantastic volunteer coaches also help to deliver the training sessions, ensuring that children have the opportunity to be supported in small groups.
